Blinken will meet with the President of the Yemeni Presidential Council in New York

U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken will meet with Yemeni Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council Dr. Rashad Al-Alimi in New York on Monday, the State Department announced on Sunday as world dignitaries arrive for the General Assembly. United Nations.

Blinken and Alimi had last met in July during US President Joe Biden’s trip to Saudi Arabia.

At the time, they discussed the importance of extending the UN-led truce “to alleviate the suffering of Yemenis and to pursue meaningful action” by Iran-backed Houthi militias to improve access to the besieged city of Taiz.

The Houthis have yet to reopen roads to Taiz, a key truce demand.

Blinken also praised the Yemeni government’s “bold leadership on the truce, which has had a tangible impact on the lives of Yemenis across the country,” according to a State Department statement.

Blinken stressed the opportunity for the truce to lead to a permanent nationwide ceasefire and the launch of an inclusive and comprehensive political process under the auspices of the UN.

He noted that “only a political agreement between the Yemeni parties, which also responds to Yemenis’ calls for justice and accountability, can bring genuine peace and lasting prosperity to the country. ”

He reiterated “his full support for the Presidential Leadership Council and its initiatives to improve the services and daily lives of Yemenis”.
