Karl Stefanovic denounces US President Joe Biden for “disrespectful” allegations about Afghanistan

Karl Stefanovic lambasted US President Joe Biden for making “disrespectful” statements about the military operation in Afghanistan.

Today Show host Karl Stefanovic criticized US President Joe Biden for saying that the 20-year military operation in Afghanistan was never intended to prevent terrorist attacks on US soil.

Speaking publicly on the withdrawal for the first time on Monday, Biden said he “strongly supports” the decision to withdraw US troops from Afghanistan despite the terror and chaos that have since erupted in Kabul.

“Our mission in Afghanistan was never meant to be about nation building,” Biden said.

“What it has always been is to prevent a terrorist attack on the American homeland.”

Stefanovic denounced the US president on the Today Show on Tuesday about the comment.

He said it was disrespectful to suggest that Allied troops were not trying to build a better country for the Afghan people.

“I thought it was incredibly disrespectful what Joe Biden said this morning for our Diggers,” he said.

“They were there to do that [build a better country] and now he says they weren’t there to do it.

“I think it’s awful… how do you expect our troops to enter a conflict in the future?”

Australia first sent military personnel to Afghanistan in October 2001 following the September 11 attacks.

Since then, a total of 41 Australian soldiers have been killed and 249 injured while serving in the war-torn country.

Speaking on Monday, Biden refused to accept blame for Kabul’s rapid and violent fall to the Taliban in recent days.

“The truth is, it happened faster than we expected,” he said.

“So what happened?” Afghan political leaders gave up and fled the country.

“The Afghan army collapsed, sometimes without trying to fight.”

Mr Biden said the rapid fall of Kabul reinforced his belief that withdrawing US troops was the right decision.

“US troops cannot and must not fight in a war and die in a war that Afghan forces are unwilling to wage for themselves,” he said.
