Mitch McConnell says Joe Biden is not Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urges US president to ‘step up his game’

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said President Biden seemed weak compared to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who on Wednesday urged Congress to provide more military firepower for its fight against Russia.

“President Biden needs to step up his game now before it’s too late,” McConnell told reporters. “I think comparing Zelenskyy to Biden is depressing. We are not doing fast enough enough to help the Ukrainians.

He also accused the administration of discouraging NATO countries near the border with Ukraine from taking more aggressive action.

“You feel like the Eastern European countries in NATO are actually being discouraged from doing whatever they could by our own administration,” the Kentucky Republican said.

Mr McConnell said he was still opposed to the United States imposing a no-fly zone over Ukrainian airspace, as Mr Zelenskyy challenged the United States to do. But he added that there are “other ways to make the air dangerous for the Russians with all kinds of different weapons”.

“We have to provide them with everything they need to try to prevent the aerial carnage,” Mr. McConnell said. “They do a lot with the artillery. That’s a different question. But I think Biden needs to step up his game.”
